Hathaway plays down Oscar rumours

Hollywood star Anne Hathaway has played down claims she could be in line for an Academy Award due to her starring role in family drama Rachel Getting Married.

The actress was speaking at the film's UK premiere in a rain-soaked Leicester Square in London.

Hathaway, 25, said the Oscar buzz surrounding her was "really cool" but insisted it was "a little premature to get excited about".

The film was highly acclaimed when it screened at the Venice Film Festival.

Anne Hathaway's on 'Sexy' New Man

Anne Hathaway

Actress Anne Hathaway seems to have moved on from her troubled ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri and tells People magazine that she even has a ‘sexy’ new mystery man in her life.

“This guy I know in L.A. is kind of doing it for me right now, “Hathaway reportedly told People. “When I think of sexy, I think of him.”

Still, Hathaway’s new romance isn’t quite serious yet, People reported, but she still thinks he really has it “going on.”

“You know when sometimes you don’t know someone very well – you’ll probably never see them again – but you just meet them and you’re like “WOW, you really have it going on?”

“I’m totally single right now,” she told People. “But I happened to meet a sexy guy the other day.”

According to People, Hathaway is scheduled to appear on-screen with another sexy man, Johnny Depp, in the new Tim Burton film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

Anne Hathaway Will Be Nominated For An Oscar

In a crowded year for Best Actress contention, Anne Hathaway could be the only first-timer to receive an Oscar nomination in the lead category, possibly going up against mainstays such as her Devil Wears Prada costar Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet, as well as the less-nominated vets Nicole Kidman and Kristen Scott Thomas. Her main competition for the outsider, dark horse position is Frozen River’s Melissa Leo (who may benefit from her film’s initiatory screener campaign even though River’s theatrical release was early and hardly noticed), and Happy-Go-Lucky’s Sally Hawkins, whose film just debuted to favorable reviews citing her brilliant (as in talented and bright) performance. But Hathaway is sure to be the victor –– even though her performance in Rachel Getting Married is hardly deserving of such an honor.

anne hathaway biography

anne hathaway biography

Anne Hathaway's first major role came in the short-lived television series "Get Real" (1999). She gained widespread recognition for her roles in The Princess Diaries (2001) and its 2004 sequel as a young girl who discovers she's a member of royalty, opposite Julie Andrews and Heather Matarazzo.

She also had a notable role in Nicholas Nickleby (2002) opposite Charlie Hunnam and Jamie Bell, and a starring role in Ella Enchanted (2004). A former top-ranking soprano in New York, Hathaway was reportedly a front-runner for the role of "Christine" in the 2004 The Phantom of the Opera (2004). However, due to scheduling conflicts with The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), she couldn't take the role, which was later given to newcomer Emmy Rossum.

Hathaway soon started to move away from family-friendly films. Following The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), she appeared topless in the films Havoc (2005) opposite Josh Peck and Brokeback Mountain (2005) opposite Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Her desire to break out of her "Princess Diaries" image parallels that of her one-time co-star, Julie Andrews, who went topless in the film S.O.B. (1981) in order to break away from the image she created from her 1960s musicals. In interviews, Hathaway said that doing family-friendly films didn't mean she was similar to their characters or mean she objected to appearing nude in other films.

Her upcoming films are The Devil Wears Prada (2006) opposite Meryl Streep, and Becoming Jane (2007), in which she'll play a young Jane Austen.
